We’ve created a list of our top places to visit in the Caribbean that is not only highly recommended, but ideal for beginners and experienced divers alike.

Best Scuba Diving in Carribean: Seven Great Destinations

1. Roatan, Honduras

If you’re looking for a party and a great time in the water, Roatan is one of the best places to visit. Our favorite part is the extroverted nature of the locals, which will surely give you the ability to find diving or fishing partners in minutes. Scuba diving isn’t the only activity popular on this island, as deep-sea fishing is also a booming activity.

2. St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

What we love the most about the U.S. Virgin Islands is that they have everything you could ask for in a vacation that all of your family members will enjoy.

St. Croix is a fantastic island because it gives divers the ability to explore walls, reefs, and wrecks all in the same location. It’s known to have some of the deepest dives on the planet.

There are multiple ways for you to get to the most popular drop off spots, which can give you water clarity starting at 100 feet. You’ll also be able to dive amongst some of the most exciting creatures in the water ranging from squid to sea turtles.

Aside from the deeper dives, there are also beginner-friendly shallow dives. For example, Butler Bay is home to one of the most famous wrecks on the island as it is shallow and has a safe profile. Divers will be able to access it either by scuba diving or by taking a boat excursion with a professional diver.

It goes without saying that there is a multitude of options at St. Croix, no matter what your experience level is.

3. The Blue Hole, Belize

The Blue Hole is easily one of the most exciting spots you will visit and scuba dive in your entire life. It’s classified as one of the most massive sinkholes on the planet as it is 400 feet deep and 1000 feet wide, all of it being under the water.

You’ll be surprised to learn that it is part of the Barrier Reef Reserve System and is currently protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The main reason as to why people go out of their way to find The Blue Hole is that it has beautiful vast depths. You’ll also appreciate its caves that are up to 100 feet under the water’s surface. If you’re looking for some marine life, you’ll love the troves of angelfish, parrotfish, hammerhead sharks, or even Caribbean reef sharks.

4. St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

Another unique U.S. Virgin Islands location is St. John, and it’s easily one of the most vibrant sites on this entire list. This particular diving spot will help you to understand the pure brilliance of a world under the water populated with different species.

Eagle Shoals is one of our favorite locations to visit on the east end island, and it’s one of the lesser-known destinations.

The entire reef sprawls across the floor of the ocean and features plenty of caves and tunnels for you to discover. One specific location is known as The Cathedral and is a giant chamber filled with coral of different vibrant hues and colors.

You’ll be particularly amazed by the number of fish navigating through the reef, including porkfish, black triggerfish, and silversides. St. John is by far, one of our favorite locations for reef diving.

5. Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

There are plenty of notable things you’ll want to experience if you visit the British Virgin Islands, with their warm water being one of the largest. Did you know that the average temperature of the water could be 84 degrees F in the winter and 77 degrees F in the summer?

Diving in warm water is an experience every scuba diver needs to have, especially if you prefer to dive without a wetsuit. When you first get into the water, you’ll immediately notice the robustness of the reefs that surround the island, which is what makes Virgin Gorda so popular. This experience is especially true for beginners, as you can sign up for guided expeditions and the waters are quite shallow up to 30 feet.

You’ll find that it’s more of an aquarium-type view of the reefs rather than having to dive deeply. You’ll have close encounters with plenty of marine life, including parrotfish, blue tangs, stingrays, nurse sharks, and Moorish idols.

6. Grand Cayman Island

If you love exploring wrecks, we also highly recommend visiting the Grand Cayman Island and the USS Kittiwake. As a 251-foot long ship that sunk right off of the coast, it’s a relatively shallow wreck to explore. That makes it one of the most popular destinations to visit.

Not to mention, it’s incredibly convenient to get to, as you likely only have to take a five-minute boat ride from Seven Mile Beach.

7. Grenada

For the seventh and final scuba diving destination on our list, Grenada is an island filled with fun and several activities for the whole family to enjoy. For the divers in your group, we highly recommend taking an excursion to the Titanic of the Caribbean. Known as a colossal wreck in all of the Caribbean, the Bianca C. sunk in 1961 from an engine fire and only killed one person.

There are plenty of opportunities for penetration dives, and you can explore the entirety of the ship ranging from the swimming pool to some of the estate rooms. The entire 600-foot cruise liner is up for exploration and contains plenty of marine life, including reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, and great barracuda.

Final Thoughts

There are hundreds of places for you to find the best scuba diving in Carribean regardless of your level of expertise. For your next excursion, consider visiting one of the above locations as it will give you an experience you won’t soon forget.
